What to Pack for Your First Holiday with Foster Children

Family holidays are a fantastic chance to enjoy the summer, keep everyone entertained during the long school break, and build some incredible memories that will last a lifetime. If you’ve got permission from your local authority and plan to take your foster children on holiday for the first time, you might wonder what you should pack. Here are some essentials to help you get started.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must for any holiday. Even if it’s overcast and doesn’t feel particularly hot, you should apply a high-SPF sunscreen whenever you go outside. Young children especially should wear factor 50+ and sunscreen suitable for sensitive skin. Remember, your foster child might be more comfortable applying sunscreen themselves. If this is the case, supervise and give them plenty of tips.

Insect Repellent

If you are staying in the UK, you shouldn’t have to worry about insects too much, but it’s still a good idea, especially if you are going hiking or exploring areas with long grass, where there can be ticks and other bugs.

Towels

Check with your accommodation to see which towels you need. Sometimes bath and hand towels are provided, but you might still need to pack towels for the beach and swimming. Taking your foster child shopping and letting them pick their fun beach towel can be a great way to involve them and get them excited about the trip.

Warm Clothes and Waterproofs

Unfortunately, even in high summer, the weather can be very unpredictable. Even if the weather forecast is good, pack some lightweight waterproofs and a few jumpers to get out and about no matter what.

Toys, Games and Books

Even on a holiday jam-packed with adventures, trips to tourist attractions and days at the beach, a bit of downtime back at your accommodation is a good idea. This gives you a chance to unwind and rest and reduces the risk of anyone feeling overwhelmed or burning out. Make sure you pack things like family board games, books, toys and electronics so that everyone has something to do on your rest days or when you come back early for a rest.

Home Comforts

Foster children need stability and comfort. This can mean that while things like holidays are a fun treat, they can feel anxious and unsettled. Taking home comforts like blankets and pillows, teddy bears, favourite toys, and even photos from home can help them feel safe and comfortable while you are away. Favourite Foods and Drinks

It can be hard to get your favourite food and drinks in different locations. This can be difficult if your foster children are fussy eaters or have particular favourites that make them comfortable. You might not want to take all your food for the duration, but a few choices can help everyone feel more at home.

Travelling with foster children can be a fantastic experience for the whole family. Make sure you’ve got the correct permission and that you pack these essentials. Then get ready to enjoy your trip.
