Fun Activities for Kids With a Toy Bow and Arrow
Kids can play archery games and improve their shooting skills, focus, concentration, and self-confidence with a toy bow and arrow. These archery toys are perfect for outdoor activities or to take home as a birthday party gift!
Please set up an obstacle course with a tic-tac-toe board and have kids compete against each other to see who can shoot their arrows into the boxes first.
Target Practice
Shooting an arrow with a kid’s toy bow and arrow helps develop hand-eye coordination, upper-body strength, and spatial awareness. It also boosts focus and concentration while encouraging kids to play outside.
Toy bows don’t necessarily make it easy for a kid to shoot an arrow with their feet – and many have crappy plastic nocks that can easily fall off the string (mainly when they are shot upside down). To make things easier, try wrapping some squishy tape – like medical or athletic tape – around the arrow rest to create a prominent spot for kids to grab with their toes to hold the bow.
This is an excellent activity for kids to do with friends or siblings and makes for a fun way to get the whole family outside. Kids will love channeling their inner Robin Hood, Merida, or Katniss while working on aiming and precision skills. This also teaches them to respect and practice safe archery.
Stuffed Animal Hunt
Kids love playing games, and this one is perfect for a rainy day or when you need a mom-break! Have your kids hunt for stuffed animals around the house or in the yard. They can hide them or have their siblings do it for a challenge. Make it even more fun with a scavenger hunt card or give clues.
This activity will work up your kid’s gross motor skills! Place a laundry hamper or bin in front of a doorway. Have your child lie on their back with a pile of soft stuffed animals at their feet and transfer them to the laundry hamper over their head. Repeat until the stuffed animals are all in the laundry basket!

H.O.R.S.E
Kids can use their toy bow and arrow to hunt for stuffed animals around the yard. It’s a fun way to improve their hand-eye, patience, and gross motor coordination.
This is a fun variation on the classic game of Horse. Set up a target board and place arrows into each tic-tac-toe box. Each player takes turns shooting their arrow into a box, and anyone who hits three in a row is declared the winner.
For an extra challenge, add squishy tape (like athletic or medical tape) over the bowstring to give kids a spot to grab with their toes while shooting. My friend Tineke did this for her son’s Robin Hood-themed birthday party in the woods, and it was a great way to help all of the kids play at the same time while still keeping track of their bows. It also makes a beautiful DIY gift idea!
Target Shooting
Playing a target shooting game is a great way to improve concentration and accuracy. This can be as simple as having your kids set up a few targets in the yard and taking turns quickly reaching for their bow and arrow from their youth archery back quiver and shooting at the target. Whoever hits their target can move to the following distance and continue challenging themselves.
To find out if your child is right or left-eye dominant:
- Have them hold their bow with the left hand and point their left shoulder at the target.
- With the right hand, have them rest an arrow on the flat base of the bow and the string.
- Use duct tape to cover one end of the arrowhead and close up the other.
You can also set up an obstacle course with your young archer to complete challenges between each target, such as jumping jacks or a race to see who can shoot their arrow into the target first. This fun and challenging activity teaches your children to focus under pressure!
