Currently, the temperatures at night are starting to drop like a lead balloon. A couple of weeks ago you couldn’t go to bed without dripping sweat. Now, it is all about wrapping yourself up in the sheets, so you don’t freeze during the night. I suppose it is not a surprise because summer is almost over. As much as I love the summer, I also like the winter. Yep, you heard me right, I like the cold weather. There is nothing better than cozying up in front of the fire with some hearty food and a glass of wine. One of my favourite recipes for winter is lamb casserole, and here is why.
A typical lamb casserole, or any casserole for that matter, will have plenty of strong ingredients like stock and the lamb itself. All the ingredients form together and create a juicy and succulent gravy that warms the cockles as soon it hits the stomach. Without a good joint of marinated lamb and some stock, it would not be half the dish it is today.
Warms Your Body
The strong ingredients are important for one reason: they increase your body temperature. During the warmer months, it is fine to eat salads and cold food because you are already nice and toasty. You don’t need to eat food that is going to make you warmer; you need food that is going to cool you down. During the winter, it is different. It is hard enough to stay warm as it is, especially because energy prices are rising. A good hearty meal like lamb casserole will do the trick.
Easy To Cook Up
Cooking is not easy because a lot of recipes require a lot of effort. If you take it seriously, you can get stuck in that loop where you are trying to recreate Michelin star recipes at home. When the temperature starts to drop, the last thing you want to do is spend hours slaving over food. You want a recipe that is quick and easy to make. You want a dish that you can put in the oven for thirty minutes and forget about. You want a lamb casserole! As long as you buy a good joint of lamb and prepare properly, the recipe will take care of itself.
Summer food is great because you can pass it around and enjoy the experience. For example, a good salad has plenty of elements from rice to potato salad to lettuce and vegetables. Winter food tends to omit this, so there isn’t as much of an experience when you eat. With a casserole, however, there are a lot of different elements just like summer recipes. Don’t just serve the casserole. Put a bowl of mash potatoes on the table along with some steamed vegetables. That way, you can have the same experience.
The Kids Will Love It
My final test is the kids. Will they like it or will they hate it? I can happily report that my children love lamb casserole, and they would eat it at any time of the year. In fact, they don’t care whether it is winter, summer or autumn; they just care about how it tastes.
If you have never tried your hand at a casserole before, there are plenty of great recipes that you can find at the click of a button. Enjoy!
