I have challenged myself to live a healthier life. I want to be a good example for my children. I want my children to be active, to develop  healthy eating habits and not have the idea that “healthy” means it tastes bad.

There are many ways that a family can begin living a healthier life without feeling like their world has been turned upside down. I am happy to share a few of my favorite small steps towards a healthier life with you.

Take Walks Together
Grab a penny and head out for a walk with your family. Whenever you are faced with a decision such as making a turn, flip the penny. Heads means you turn right, Tails means you turn left. You will discover things about your neighborhood, you will be exercising and spending time together as a family.

Have a Dance Party
Kids love to dance for a good reason… it is fun! Once a week play a few favorite songs and get the family together to bust out their best moves. Dancing is great exercise, everyone will have fun and you will create memories to last a lifetime.

Switch Your Flour
Coconut Flour is gluten free, high in fiber and high in protein. Almond flour is high in protein, low in carbohydrates and sugar and is readily available in stores and online. Both of these flour options will add a subtle new dimension to the flavor of food and have nutritional benefits that bleached flour doesn’t have.

Reduce the Amount of Sugar In Your Diet
If you are baking you can reduce the amount of sugar in your recipes by about 1/3 of what the recipe calls for without anyone noticing a difference in flavor. Using fresh ingredients over packaged and processed foods you will drastically reduce your sugar consumption.

Small Changes for Big Results
I once heard a 70 year old guy who was in great shape say that he stayed in shape with one technique during his whole life. Every time he saw something on the ground he bent down and picked it up. This would be a good way to start small with increasing your activity levels and the world will be a more beautiful place because of your picking up.

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
Most people are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Try adding one extra serving in per day for a week, then add another serving a day for a week, gradually increasing your fresh fruit and vegetable servings and avoiding shock value. Try grilling and roasting vegetables to add flavor and texture. Experiment with adding vegetables to your favorite dishes. Eat freeze-dried vegetables and fruits at snack time. Fruit Salads make great additions to breakfast, lunch and dinner, and fruit salad makes a fantastic dessert option too. You can use any combination of fruit for a variety of tasty side dishes the whole family will enjoy.

Drink More Water
My son gives me a very hard time about drinking water. He doesn’t like it, he thinks it tastes gross. He would rather have juice or milk. to get him to drink water I give him 7 ounces of water to 1 ounce of juice. He has the flavor he craves and I get my way too, he is drinking water.
I hope these ideas for ideas of how a family can take steps  towards living a healthier life inspire you to make changes to improve your life.  If you have any ideas or tips about making small steps towards a better life I would love to hear from you!
