DIY Wooden Letter Wall Hangings

Using wooden letters to decorate your walls provides your home with an artistic, personalized touch. However, deciding how to go about hanging them can be a challenge. There are many methods for hanging wooden letters, but it’s important to choose the option that works best for both your design and your wall.

DIY Wooden Letter Hanging Methods

The most popular and often most practical way of mounting wooden letters on your wall is to place picture mounts on their backs. Be sure to attach them to the letters so they won’t be noticeable, and so they hang on your wall straight. Hammer small wire nails into your wall where you want your letters to hang. Because this type of nail bends easily, take care to hammer them in straight. Any bending may cause your design to look awkward.

Of course, this method won’t work so well if you’re using large or heavy wooden letters. For these, it’s recommended to hang them using wall anchors or other hardware appropriate for mounting heavy items. If at all possible, locate your wall studs using a stud finder and drive your screws or nails into them. This provides a much more solid foundation for large wooden letter designs.

If you want a method that is less complicated and not as potentially destructive, you can always go with picture wire and hooks. Fasten the wire hooks to the back of each letter, stretch a piece of picture wire between them and tie it off securely. Place your wire nails in the desired locations and mount a letter on each nail by allowing the picture wire to catch on it. To avoid disturbances in your design’s layout, make sure you use the shortest possible length of wire.

Safe Alternatives

If you live in an apartment or you have thin walls, you may not be able to hang your wooden letters using nails or screws. Fortunately, you can still enjoy your DIY wooden letter wall hanging without causing damage or losing your deposit. If your letters are lightweight, you can use double-sided tape or adhesive mounting hooks as a non-intrusive hanging method. Adhesive putty is also an ideal trick for hanging lightweight wooden letters. If you rent, you may already use a lot of this. Yet another possibility is using self-adhesive velcro. Simply cut a tiny piece and press it onto the back of a letter. Press the letter to the wall make the other side stick.

Other tools you can utilize include decorative chains, ribbon, beads colorful shoelaces, raffia and jute or hemp twine.
