Mothers are often drawn to care professions. It must be all the practice we get looking after our children. There’s nothing more rewarding than giving back and looking after those in need. And, this a career path that could lead in a variety of directions. Care home work is always an option. Or, you could take things all the way and delve into the medical profession. The thing to bear in mind, if you do go down that path, is that any signs you belong in healthcare may not be enough. You also need to be sure you have what it takes. No matter what medical route you take, it’s not going to be easy. Here are some of the things you need to succeed.

A STRONG STOMACH

To make it in any healthcare industry, especially medicine, you need a stomach of steel. You may think you’ll be okay if you can cope with blood, but that’s not all you’ll face. You may also have to deal with vomit. And, you’ll often have to help people go to the toilet. If you can do that and eat your dinner after it, you should be okay. But, if the idea makes you feel sick, you might need to think again. It’s also important that bodily functions don’t embarrass you. You need to remain professional and understand that the patient is in a compromising position. If you’re embarrassed, you’ll make things difficult for them. On the one hand, this is something you’ll get used to the more you do it. But, if things like this are a real issue for you, it’s worth reconsidering.

A GOOD MEMORY

You aren’t going to get far in medicine without a good memory. Worse, you could cause major slip-ups if you’re forgetful. You’ll need to remember an awful lot to make this career work. From medicine types, to equipment like that found at Foremost Medical Equipment, you need to remember it all. Plus, you need to remember how to use it! You should receive refresher training often, but you need to know what you’re doing. A good memory can also help you when it comes to your patients. Remembering stories they tell you, or family members that visit will help you put them at ease. And, that’s what this job is all about. If you have trouble remembering what you had for breakfast, this may not be the career for you.

A STRONG WORK ETHIC

You’re also going to need a strong work ethic. All care work involves long hours. You could be working up to 12 hours per shift. Plus, you’ll be working nights sometimes. Of course, your children are your top priority. You need to ensure that work like this won’t hinder their care. But, you’ll also need to be sure that you’re up for the challenge. The work won’t be easy, either. It’s often a physically demanding career that takes a lot of mental resilience. Bear that in mind when making your choice.
