When was the last time you had a routine maintenance check-up done on your air conditioning unit? Sometimes the air conditioning unit is the one thing we forget requires routine maintenance to work at it’s full potential. Air conditioners have coils, filters, and fins that require regular maintenance. When you do not maintain your air conditioning unit, the air conditioning performance declines and the energy use increases, which costs more money.
The most important maintenance task is to clean or replace your filter. Clogged and dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce the system’s efficiency. When you regularly clean or replace your filter, you lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by five to fifteen percent! Lowering your energy consumption is always a good thing especially when it also benefits your family’s health.
The coils in your air conditioner collect dirt over time. The dirt reduces airflow and insulates the coil, which reduces its ability to absorb heat. To avoid this issue, you should check your coils yearly and clean them as necessary.
If you have an outdoor condenser unit, removing leaves and trimming foliage (at least two feet back) will allow for adequate airflow around the condenser. The fins on the coils are easily bent and can block airflow through the coil. You can “comb” these fins back in to their original condition, which will open up the airflow once again.
Since it is getting cooler out, now is the time to start a new maintenance routine for your air conditioning unit to prepare for the hotter months that will be arriving. You will end up saving money, and your home will be more comfortable. We all like to be proud of our homes and keep the insides clean, bright and cheery. We have to remember, that our air conditioners need to have the same attention given to them as we give the inside of our homes.
Imagine the heat index being over one hundred degrees and your air conditioning unit is only blowing out semi-cold air. You will end up running the air all day long because no matter what, you will still be pretty warm due to the unit’s efficiency decline. This will also cause your bill to go up significantly. On top of that high bill, you will eventually realize that you need to purchase a brand new unit because yours is most likely beyond the possibility of a repair. If you make sure you are maintaining your unit regularly, you will not run into any of these problems. Make a list of everything you need to do, and start going down the list. You will regret it if you don’t!
